- Toilets or drains throughout the house suddenly stop draining normally.

- You smell strong sewage odors along with unusually wet ground.
- The alarm remains active despite significantly reducing water use.
- You know the pump or treatment equipment has lost power.
What Does a Septic Alarm Usually Mean?
Many septic systems with pumps use floats inside a pump chamber to control when the pump turns on and off.
Under normal operation, wastewater enters the chamber, the liquid level rises, and the pump moves wastewater to the next part of the system.
A separate high-water float sits above the normal operating range.
If the wastewater reaches that float, the alarm activates.
VDH describes the upper float on a typical pump system as the high-water alarm. If the pump does not start when expected, the rising water reaches that alarm float and triggers an audible and visual warning.

Common Reasons a Septic Alarm May Go Off
Several different problems can produce the same alarm.
1. The Septic Pump Is Not Running
If your system depends on a pump and that pump stops working, wastewater can continue entering the chamber without being moved onward.
Possible issues can involve the pump itself, its electrical supply, controls, or related equipment.
This is one reason an alarm should not automatically be interpreted as drainfield failure.
2. A Float or Control Is Not Working Correctly
Floats tell the system when to activate the pump and when the water has reached an abnormal level.

Heavy use does not prove that anything has failed, but an alarm that repeatedly follows ordinary household water use deserves investigation.
5. Heavy Rain or Excess Water Is Affecting the System
Significant rainfall, drainage problems, or excess irrigation can place additional stress on an onsite sewage system.
VDH recommends keeping excess water from irrigation, rainfall, and drains away from the drainfield.
An alarm that appears during or shortly after very wet conditions may therefore need to be evaluated in the context of the entire system rather than simply resetting the panel.
6. Wastewater Is Not Moving Through the System Normally
Sometimes the pump is operating, but something farther downstream prevents wastewater from being dispersed as designed.
That is a different problem from a failed pump.

Start with the things that reduce risk without attempting to diagnose equipment yourself.
1. Reduce Water Use
Until you know why the alarm activated, use as little water as reasonably possible.
Avoid:
- Running several loads of laundry
- Taking long showers
- Filling a bathtub

This is particularly useful in Loudoun County.
Loudoun County makes well and septic records available through its Online RME system. The county says those records can help homeowners, realtors, contractors, and septic providers identify wells and septic systems.
Your records may help answer questions such as:
- Do I have a conventional or alternative system?
- Is there a pump chamber?
- Where are the components located?
- What system was approved for the property?
- Is there documentation that identifies an AOSS or other specialized equipment?
Loudoun recommends searching by Tax ID or property information and provides additional scanned septic records when available.

Does a Septic Alarm Mean the Tank Needs Pumping?
Not necessarily.
This is one of the easiest assumptions to make because pumping removes wastewater from the tank or chamber and may temporarily lower the liquid level.
But that does not tell you why the alarm occurred.
If the real problem is a failed pump, malfunctioning float, electrical issue, control problem, or another system component, pumping alone does not repair it.
Routine septic pumping is important. VDH recommends household septic tanks generally be pumped every three to five years, depending on household wastewater generation, tank size, and solids accumulation.
But routine pumping and diagnosing a septic alarm are two different things.
If emergency pumping is needed to prevent an overflow or backup, that can be appropriate while the actual cause is investigated.
The useful question to ask is:
"What caused the liquid level to become high enough to trigger the alarm?"
When Should You Call a Septic Professional?
Consider professional evaluation when:
- The alarm does not clear.
- The alarm keeps returning.
- There is no obvious temporary cause such as a brief power outage.
- The septic pump does not appear to be operating.
- The breaker keeps tripping.

If You Have an Alternative Septic System in Loudoun County
This deserves special attention.
Loudoun County requires owners of alternative onsite septic systems to have required inspections, and the county explains that inspection reports are submitted electronically by system operators.
VDH also states that alternative onsite sewage systems are required to be inspected at least annually by a licensed operator.
If you have an AOSS and the alarm activates:
- Find the system's operating information if you have it.
- Check your septic records if you are unsure what system is installed.
- Contact your AOSS operator or another properly qualified professional.
- Tell them exactly which light, message, or alarm is active.
- Mention any backup, odor, wet ground, outage, or recent heavy water use.
The more specific the information, the easier it may be to separate a component problem from a larger system problem.
Could Repairing the Alarm System Require a Permit?
It depends on what actually needs to be replaced or repaired.
Loudoun County distinguishes between maintenance/component work and repairs requiring county review under its Wells & Onsite Septic Systems process. Its current Environmental Health fee schedule includes separate categories for an OSS Repair Construction Permit,Minor Modification Construction Permit, and Component Replacement Permit.
That is another reason diagnosis matters before approving work.
A failed float, pump-related component, or control issue is not the same project as reconstruction of a drainfield or major modification of the onsite sewage system.
If the proposed work is substantial, ask the professional:
"Does this work require a Loudoun County Health Department permit or component replacement permit?"
